Matthew Kane, born in Australia, spent a significant part of his childhood residing in the United Kingdom, Greece, Italy, and France. He pursued Fine Art at The National Art School in Sydney (1982-1983), delved into Film & Television Production, and later explored Psychology at the University of New England. Matthew's diverse professional journey led him through the film industry and software development, all the while maintaining his passion for painting and photography.

Working primarily with acrylics, Matthew's artistic practice is inherently intuitive. His process involves continuous experimentation and revision, often leading his work in unforeseen and unplanned directions, resulting in a transformation from its initial conception.

Many of Matthew's creations draw inspiration from recognizable portraits of historical figures. However, through his process of unraveling and reconfiguration, these initial reference images undergo a metamorphosis, sometimes becoming obscured. The artworks navigate the delicate balance between familiarity and ambiguity, where figures are either revealed or concealed through expressive gestures.
